MATERUNI WATERFALLS
Hike through Chagga villages on Kilimanjaro’s lower slopes to a 90-metre waterfall that drops into a cold plunge pool.
Afterwards you sit with a Chagga family and make coffee from their own crop — picking, husking, roasting over a fire and grinding it by hand while they sing the song that sets the rhythm. You drink what you made.

CHEMKA HOT SPRINGS
A geothermal spring in dry scrubland that forms a pool of genuinely unreal turquoise water, shaded by enormous fig trees with roots dropping straight into it.
The water sits around 25°C year-round. There is a rope swing. After five days of descending Kilimanjaro on wrecked quadriceps, this is the single best thing you can do.

ARUSHA PARK WALKING
Every other safari puts you in a vehicle. This one puts you on foot, alongside an armed park ranger, walking up to giraffe, zebra, warthog and buffalo in Arusha National Park.
Being at ground level with a giraffe forty metres away changes your sense of scale completely. The afternoon adds a canoe paddle on the Momella Lakes among the flamingos.

Why they work
PERFECT FOR
Most people finish Kilimanjaro with a spare day before their flight and no idea what to do with it. These are what our own guides do on their days off.
No Planning Needed
Book the night before on WhatsApp. We collect you from your hotel and have you back by late afternoon.
Gentle On Tired Legs
Chemka asks nothing of you. Geothermal water at 25°C is the fastest way to fix five days of descent.
Real Local Value
Materuni and Chemka are community-run. Your money stays in the villages on Kilimanjaro's slopes.

Can I book one of these at short notice?
Yes. WhatsApp us the evening before and we will confirm a pick-up time. These run daily.
Are they suitable for children?
Chemka and Materuni both work well with children — the Materuni walk is manageable from about age seven. The Arusha walking safari has a park-set minimum age of twelve.
What should I bring?
Swimwear and a towel for Chemka and Materuni, closed shoes with grip for the waterfall path, sunscreen, and a little cash for tips or crafts.
Can you combine two in one day?
Materuni and Chemka can be combined for $150 per person, but it makes for a rushed twelve hours. We would rather you did one properly.
