The Spice Islands

AND THEN,

THERE'S ZANZIBAR

THE BEST THING YOU CAN DO

AFTER A SUMMIT

Almost everyone who finishes Kilimanjaro says the same thing on the drive back to Arusha: they want to lie down somewhere warm and not move. Zanzibar is ninety minutes away by air.

It is also a genuine destination in its own right — a thousand years of Swahili, Omani, Persian and Indian history on one small island, with some of the best reef diving in East Africa.

The shortcut

FLY,

DON'T DRIVE

The overland route means a full day in a vehicle to Dar es Salaam followed by a ferry. The flight takes ninety minutes and lands you in Stone Town in time for lunch.

Our Flying Safari add-on connects you directly from Seronera airstrip or Kilimanjaro International, with luggage handled through. It costs $280 per person.

STRAIGHT ANSWERS

Direct flights run daily from Seronera airstrip and from Kilimanjaro International Airport. Ninety minutes, and it saves a full day of driving plus a ferry.

No. Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, so your Tanzanian visa covers it. You will pass a short immigration check and need proof of travel insurance.

Zanzibar is predominantly Muslim and Stone Town is conservative. Shoulders and knees covered is both respectful and cooler. Beachwear is fine at the resorts.

Nungwi and Kendwa in the north have minimal tidal variation so you can swim at any hour. Paje and Jambiani on the east have dramatic tides and suit kitesurfing.
